Special university entrance qualification

Your citizenship is from a non-EU/EEA country and your secondary-school leaving certificate/university degree has been issued in a non-EU/EEA country as well?

  • In Austria you may only study degree programmes that you are allowed to study in the country that issued your secondary-school leaving certificate/university degree.
  • A university accredited in the country where your secondary-school leaving certificate/university degree was issued has to confirm that you have the right to begin this programme in this country (we call it "special university entrance qualification").
  • Applications for other programmes will be rejected if the required special university entrance qualification is missing.

For example:

You are Iranian, have an Iranian secondary-school leaving certificate and want to study Mathematics. Then you need a confirmation from an accredited Iranian university saying you are allowed to study Mathematics in Iran (the Islamic Azad University is not accepted!).

You are Mongolian, have attended secondary school in Russia and want to study Business Administration. Then you need a confirmation from a Russian university saying you are allowed to study Business Administration in Russia.

The certificate should not be older than a year and has to include:

  • your name,
  • date of issue,
  • the exact name of the degree programme  (the name of the faculty is not sufficient!) and
  • the confirmation that you fulfil all requirements to study the degree programme in the country that issued your secondary-school leaving certificate/university degree

You get the certificate of special university entrance qualification:

  1. directly at the recognised/accredited university or
  2. via the central examination authority (e.g. in China or Turkey) or
  3. by passing an entrance examination.

If you are currently studying the degree programme in the country that issued your secondary-school leaving certificate/university degree, it is sufficient to provide a confirmation of enrolment of the current or next semester/academic year (a confirmation of enrolment of the Islamic Azad University in Iran is not accepted).

You can use this sample (except 2. and 3. from the above list):

Exemptions from the special university entrance qualification
