An "extension curriculum" or "EC" is a combination of several courses (a so-called module goup) of 15 or 30 ECTS credits of a different degree programme. You can imagine it like a "mini degree programme" within your own degree programme. 

Let's illustrate this principle by means of an example:
Sumeya is studying the bachelor programme "Sociology" at the University of Vienna. Currently, she is in her fifth semester and her curriculum contains extension curricula to an extent of 30 ECTS credits. She has just completed the EC "Introduction to International Development" and thus achieved 15 ECTS credits. The EC consists of five lectures which provide an introduction in the most important thematic areas of "International Development". She chose this one, because she would like to study the master programme "International Development" after having completed her bachelor programme. This is why she will now start with her second EC "International Development: Speciaisation" consisting of 15 ECTS credits. Together, both ECs add up to 30 ECTS credits, which means that she has met the requirements for her degree programme in Sociology. 

Nearly all degree programmes provide ECs and, if not specified otherwise in the study plan of your degree programme, you can select the courses freely according to your own interests. You can also let yourself be guided by your desired master programme, because some master programmes require a completion of specific ECs.

In order to complete an EC, you must first register for the EC in u:space. You will be able to register for individual courses of the EC after having passed the STEOP.
