Leave of absence
Would you like to take a break from your studies? You can request a leave of absence for specific reasons. This applies to all your studies at the University of Vienna.
Are you enrolled in a doctoral/PhD programme or a programme at the Postgraduate Centre? Please contact the Doctoral Centre or the Postgraduate Centre ServiceCentre.
Grounds for a leave of absence
Submit your application for a leave of absence in good time before the start of the semester. If the reason for the leave of absence emerges later, you may in some cases submit the application during the semester, but you will need to provide additional evidence of this.
Find out when which reasons for a leave of absence apply and what evidence you need to provide.

- As proof of self-employment, a corresponding confirmation (tax book extract, cash register contract, etc.) in conjunction with a statutory declaration on the extent of the impairment can be accepted.
Please note:
- Educational measures that are not related to a professional activity are not considered as reasons for a leave of absence.
- Pay slips cannot be accepted as proof. Employment contracts are accepted in exceptional cases, provided they are not older than 12 weeks.
This concerns a significant interference with your studies for at least four weeks due to the settlement of issues with authorities abroad.

How to apply for a leave of absence
- Scan the required documents and combine them into a single PDF file.
- Complete the Servicedesk online form by the deadline and attach the required documents.
Once your application has been processed, you will be sent an email to your u:account email address. As soon as the Student's Union fee has been received in u:space → Financial matters → Tuition/Student's Union fee, you can print out your study record under Personal matters → My documents.
You may apply for a leave of absence as often as you require during your studies.
Consequences of your leave of absence
If you take a break from your studies, your enrolment will remain valid, but the semester count will be suspended (this also applies to the minimum number of credits). A leave of absence does not prevent you from being automatically transfered to a new curriculum. You may continue to use the u:account services and the library.
During your leave of absence, you will receive your student record sheet but not a confirmation of study periods. You will not be able to validate your u:card as a student ID card for the semester during which you are on leave.
If the reason for your leave of absence still applies after the semester, you can apply for a further leave of absence.
You may take examinations, submit an application for recognition, submit academic work for assessment and attend courses
- until the end of the admission period if you apply for a leave of absence during the admission period and were already admitted in the previous semester.
- until the date of application if you apply for leave of absence after the end of the admission period.
You may take examinations (including those from the semester in which you took a leave of absence) after the leave of absence has ended.
During your leave of absence, you do not pay tuition fees, but you must continue to pay the Students' Union fee. Please ensure you pay this on time, otherwise your degree programme will be automatically terminated.
- You have already paid the tuition fee and are now on a leave of absence? A reimbursement of the tuition fee is possible if you apply for a leave of absence by 30 November (winter semester) or 30 April (summer semester).
- If the application for a leave of absence is not granted, you must pay the tuition fee/Students' Union fee as prescribed. The same applies if you withdraw an approved application.
- Studying at another university: If you wish to take a leave of absence at another university, you must also submit an application there.
- Residence permit: The approval of a leave of absence does not automatically lead to the issue or extension of a residence permit. Clarify the possible consequences of the leave of absence in terms of immigration and residence law with the relevant authority before submitting your application. If you live in Vienna, Municipal Department 35 is responsible. If you live in another province, your district administration is the competent authority.
- University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (VWU): A leave of absence during the VWU is possible. Make sure you clarify the effects on your residence permit with the relevant authority before submitting your application!
- Financial aid: Clarify with the relevant authority whether you can receive family or student financial aid.
- Insurance: Co-insurance with relatives or student self-insurance may not be possible. Please enquire directly with your insurance company.
Closing and resuming your studies
Are you planning to take a longer break from your studies? You have the option of closing your studies and resuming them at a later date. Please check the conditions for resuming your studies in advance.
