Reform of the teacher education programme
Due to a change in legislation, new curricula will apply from 1 October 2026 onwards. Here, you can find information about the next steps in the process.
-
Why is the programme reformed?
The Austrian National Council has decided that the teacher education programme for the secondary school will be changed to a three-year bachelor’s and a two-year master's programme on 1 October 2026. Therefore, the curricula need to be redesigned.
The most important changes:
- Bachelor's degree: 180 ECTS (or 210 ECTS for the teaching subject computer science in combination with a second teaching subject).
- Master's degree: 120 ECTS.
-
What does this mean for your studies?
The reform affects all new students who are just starting their studies and students who are already completing a teacher training programme. Depending on your progress, there are different recommendations:
For new students:
- Please complete the StEOP and wait for information from February 2026.
For Bachelor's students:
- Completion of current studies: If you can complete your Bachelor's degree (240 ECTS) by October 2026, we recommend that you continue to pursue this goal. Your previous achievements can be recognised for the new Master's degree.
- Transferring to the new programme: If you wish to transfer to the new teacher training programme, you should prioritise completing compulsory subject-specific and subject-didactic courses in your teaching subjects in the 2025/26 winter semester. Taking elective courses (10 ECTS) is not recommended, as these are not included in the new programme.
For Master's students:
- Completion of current programme: If you can complete your Master's programme by October 2026, we recommend that you continue to pursue this goal.
- Transfer to the new programme: If you wish to transfer to the new teacher training programme, you should concentrate on compulsory subject-specific and subject-didactic courses and on completing your Master's thesis in the winter semester 2025/26.
The University of Vienna will support you in ensuring that your previous achievements are recognised.

What is happening next?
- Curriculum development: Since January 2025, 29 curriculum working groups have been working on the development of the new curricula. These are based on competence profiles that have been developed in recent months for the subject matter and subject didactics of the respective teaching subjects. The guiding question was: What do graduates of teacher education programmes need to know and be able to do?
- Curriculum decision: The new curricula are to be finalised by the end of January 2026.
- Information for students: From mid-February 2026, you will be informed about the transition scenarios, courses and examinations in the 2026 summer semester.
