Master programme in Media Informatics

 Degree programme with selection procedure

A selection procedure is conducted for admission to this master programme.

  • Graduates from the bachelor programme in Computer Science and Business Informatics at the University of Vienna are exempt from this selection procedure.
  • All other prospective students can only submit your application for admission to the degree programme once per year, within the application period.  
  • The admission letter is only valid for the winter semester you have applied for and the following summer semester. 
  • The allocation of available study places ensues during the selection procedure in a written exam. In total, 85 study places are available per academic year for the master programmes in Computer Science and Media Informatics for all prospective students who have completed other previous degree programmes. 

The application period for the academic year 2026/27: from 2 March to 7 April 2026.

 Degree programme instructed in English

The language of instruction in this degree programme is English. A proof of German language proficiency is not required.

English language proficiency at level B2

To be admitted to an English or multilingual master programme at the University of Vienna, you have to provide a proof of English language proficiency. 

To apply for admission to this degree programme, you require a proof of English language proficiency at level B2.

How to write your letter of motivation

  1. Create a table with the computer science courses you passed and make sure you include their ECTS credits. Show that you meet the 90 ECTS requirement.
  2. Argue why your completed degree programme and professional activities qualify you for the master programme in Computer Science or the master programme in Media Informatics (depending on which programme you’re applying for). As a reference for your qualification please consider the bachelor programme in Computer Science at the University of Vienna.
  3. Give us an idea with which research groups you’d be most interested in collaborating (for, e.g., the practical courses), and let us know why.

Successful participation in the written exam

You can only take part in the written test with an official permission to attend. The test will take place on 8 July 2026 in Vienna.
