  • Further previous studies

Is your previous degree programme not listed above? Regarding the subject-relatedness of bachelor programmes, PThG 2024 § 11 applies:

"(1) The bachelor's programme provides a broad basic education in psychotherapy within the meaning of § 9.
    (2) Within the framework of the bachelor programme, fundamental

    1. technical and methodological knowledge,
    2. professional ethics,
    3. basic scientific skills and
    4. basic social communication and self-reflection skills

are to be acquired through theoretical training, practical psychosocial experience, psychotherapeutic supervision and psychotherapeutic self-awareness in accordance with the appendix."

If your previous degree programme fulfils these knowledge and competence requirements, and if you have passed the selection procedure, a decision on admission will be made on a case-by-case basis. Supplementary examinations may be required.

If you lack the broad basic training in psychotherapy in accordance with § 9 of the PThG 2024, your previous studies are not subject-related. In this case, admission is not possible even if you have successfully passed the selection procedure.

 Allocation of study places

The study places are allocated based on your results in the written test. Your grades during your previous studies have no influence on the ranking. In addition, the following quota regulations apply:

  • At least 75 % of the available study places are reserved for persons who have obtained their secondary-school leaving certificate in Austria, have a secondary-school leaving certificate equivalent to the Austrian one, or fall under the decree on certain groups of persons.
  • At least 95 % of the available study places are reserved for citizens of an EU country and persons who are equivalent to them in terms of access to higher education.
  • A maximum of 5 % of the available study places can be allocated to applicants who are assigned to the "Non-EU" quota. The requirement for this is that they achieve a place among the best.

 Which quota applies to you?

In your application for admission, you assign yourself to a quota. The quota system is based on your citizenship and the country in which your secondary-school leaving certificate was issued. Where you completed your bachelor programme is not relevant for the quota regulation.

Upload your secondary-school leaving certificate or, if applicable, proof of belonging to the decree on certain groups of persons as evidence of your membership of the respective quota. We will check your details during the processing of your application after the test.

  • Austria quota

The so-called "Austria quota" is reserved for all persons who have obtained their secondary-school leaving certificate in Austria, regardless of their nationality. This also includes secondary-school leaving certificates that are equivalent to Austrian ones.

In addition, the following special regulations apply:

    • Persons to whom the decree of certain groups of persons applies:
Secondary-school leaving certificates issued to persons to whom the groups of persons specified in the decree on certain groups of persons apply are considered equivalent to secondary-school leaving certificates issued in Austria.
    • Secondary-school leaving certificates from South Tyrol, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein:
Secondary-school leaving certificates from South Tyrol, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein are considered equivalent to Austrian secondary-school leaving certificates on the basis of corresponding agreements. Persons with secondary-school leaving certificates from these countries are therefore to be assigned to the "Austrian quota".
    • European Baccalaureate ("Europäisches Abiturzeugnis"):
Holders of a European Baccalaureate (secondary-school leaving certificate from the "European Schools") have all the rights associated with possession of a secondary school leaving certificate from their country of origin. They also fulfil the same requirements for admission to all higher education institutions in the territory of each member state as the citizens of those states who hold the relevant qualifications (cf. the Agreement on the Statutes of the European Schools, Federal Law Gazette III No. 173/2005). Persons who hold a European Baccalaureate are therefore assigned to the "Austria quota".
    • "Studienberechtigungsprüfung" (SBP)
Graduates of a subject-relevant SBP fall under the Austria quota.
    • IB Diploma
An IB Diploma obtained in accordance with the regulations of the International Baccalaureate Organisation is considered a foreign secondary-school leaving certificate for admission to a degree programme at an Austrian public university, private university, university of applied sciences or teacher training college. This also applies if the IB Diploma was obtained at a school located in Austria.
It is therefore not possible to be assigned to the "Austria quota" solely on the basis of the IB Diploma. Please check whether the decree of certain groups of persons applies in your case.
  • EU quota

The so-called "EU quota" applies to EU citizens who do not have an Austrian secondary-school leaving certificate or an equivalent qualification.

For example: You have Austrian citizenship and a German Abitur.

The following persons are considered equivalent to EU citizens with regard to access to higher education:

    • EEA citizens and Swiss citizens
    • People with "Aufenthaltstitel Daueraufenthalt – EU" or "Daueraufenthaltskarte"

Please note: If the decree on certain groups of persons applies in your case or you have Turkish citizenship and the "Assoziationsabkommen EWG – Türkei" applies to you, you count towards the Austria quota. Persons with EU/EEA citizenship or equivalent third-country nationals with a secondary-school leaving certificate from South Tyrol, Liechtenstein or Luxembourg also fall under the Austria quota.

  • Non-EU quota

The so-called "non-EU quota" applies to applicants who are not citizens of an EU member state and who are not treated as equivalent to EU citizens with regard to access to higher education. A further requirement is that they did not obtain their secondary-school leaving certificate in Austria and do not hold an equivalent secondary-school leaving certificate.

    For example:

    • You have British citizenship and a German Abitur. You fall into the non-EU quota.
    • You have Ukrainian citizenship and an IB Diploma. You fall into the non-EU quota.
    • You are a citizen of Bosnia-Herzegovina and also obtained your secondary-school leaving certificate there. You fall into the non-EU quota.

However, if the decree on certain groups of persons applies, the Austria quota is relevant.
