Visiting Master
Please note:
As a Visiting Master’s student, you are not permitted to study master’s programme that require a selection procedure.
What do I need for admission?

Required documents
- Valid passport or identity card (both sides) in the format JPEG or PNG
- Proof of German language proficiency at level A2 when submitting an application for a German-language master's programme, as well as fulfilment of any other requirements specified in the curriculum
- Your higher education degree certificate and transcripts/diploma supplement the required translation and legalisation
- Application form and letter of recommendation (PDF) from the supervisor/responsible academic authority at your home university
- Your letter of recommendation has to confirm that the attendance of specific lectures or the use of certain institutions of the University of Vienna is useful and required for the completion of your master's programme. Furthermore, it has to confirm that your academic achievements will be recognised for the degree programme at your home university.

Winter semester 2026/27:
- Application period: 22 June to 5 September 2026
- Admission period: 13 July to 31 October 2026
- Semester start: 1 October
Summer semester 2027:
- Application period: 16 November 2026 to 5 February 2027
- Admission period: 11 January to 31 March 2027
- Semester start: 1 March
Step 2: Submit your application for admission
Next, set up a u:account in our student portal u:space. We explain exactly how to do this and what you need to bear in mind here:
Set up a u:account
Select “u:account Registration” in u:space and set up your u:account. Make sure you remember your login details, as you will need them for your studies. We will send an activation link to your e-mail address.
Register in u:space
Log in to u:space and complete the registration for prospective students. Here's how:
- After logging in, first select “Studies”.
- Fill in your personal data in the registration form for students.
- Upload your valid passport or identity card (front and back!) as a JPEG or PNG file.
- Submit your application within the application period at Studies → Apply for admission. Upload all the necessary documents there. If you have prepared all documents submitting your application will only take a few minutes.
Your application in u:space:
Upload all required documents. We can only process your application if you have uploaded all documents including translation and, if required, legalisation.
Please check the Master Access Guide (MAG) for your chosen degree programme to find out which proof of language proficiency you need to provide when applying and for your admission.
Complete the statistical data and select “Continue to application”. Make sure that all the details you have entered are correct.
As soon as the status of your application in u:space is “submitted”, please message us via the Visiting Master form in the Servicedesk.
Once you have submitted your application for admission, wait for your admission letter. The processing may take several weeks. For organisational reasons, we are unable to provide any information on the status of your application.
We will send your admission letter to the e-mail address you provided in u:space. You will then also be able to find it in u:space at Personal Matters → My Documents.
Step 3: Complete the admission procedure
Your admission letter will contains all the information you need regarding the next steps in the admission procedure.
Your admission letter is valid only for the semester for which you have applied. Admission as a Visiting Master’s student is only possible once.
If you wish to continue your studies at the University of Vienna afterwards, you must apply for admission to a degree programme, submitting all the necessary documents.
