It is the aim of the master’s programme in Jewish Studies to investigate Judaism in its entire complexity as an independent discipline, analyse its interaction with changing environments and discuss its position in different historical and geographic contexts. Students concentrate on the methodology, main research theories and history of the subject and acquire knowledge of the central issues of Jewish studies and the basic questions in philosophy of science.

Please note that the instruction language of this programme is German. To start the degree programme, you need to hold a certificate of German proficiency on C1 level.

Study Programme

The master’s programme consists of following modules:

(1) Compulsory Module Hebrew and Aramaic Texts;

(2) Compulsory module: Jewish Tradition from the Antiquity to the Present Day: Sources, Topics, Hermeneutics;

(3) Group of elective modules: Jewish Cultural History – advanced module chosen according to interest (students have to select 3 out of 4): (3a) Antiquity, (3b) Rabbinic Literature and Culture, (3c) Middle Ages, (3d) from the Modern Period to the Present Day; and

(4) Compulsory Module Final Module.

This master’s programme prepares students for a wide range of occupational fields, primarily in the area of history and cultural studies (e.g. in the field of media, state administration, libraries, museums, religious and cultural organisations, etc.).
