Master programme in Sinophone Societies and Cultures

Your steps in the admission procedure depend on whether you have completed your previous degree programme at the University of Vienna or another post-secondary educational institution.

 Degree programme instructed in English

The language of instruction in this degree programme is English. A proof of German language proficiency is not required.

Additional requirements

English language proficiency at level B2

To be admitted to an English or multilingual master programme at the University of Vienna, you have to provide a proof of English language proficiency. 

To apply for admission to this degree programme, you require a proof of English language proficiency at level B2

Qualitative admission requirements (QZB)

Admission to a master programme is only possible, if you have completed an eligible previous degree programme. In this master programme you must also fulfill qualitative admission requirements (QZB) when you submit your application. These QZB are binding and determine which knowledge and competencies you must prove at the time of your application. QZB cannot be completed during the course of the degree programme you are applying for (contrary to supplementary examinations). 

For the master programme in Sinophone Societies and Cultures, you must fulfill the following QZB: 

  • (a) Competencies in academic work in the field of social or cultural studies (including elaborating research questions, summarising the state of research, method-guided analysis of material as central examination subject with an explict relation to at least one sinophone society or culture) to an extent of 14 ECTS in total. 
  • (b) Competencies in academic work in the field of social or cultural studies (including elaborating research questions, summarising the state of research, method-guided analysis of material as central examination subject in the field of social or cultural studies)  to an extent of 16 ECTS in total. 
  • (c) Basic knowledge of at least one sinophone society or culture to an extent of at least 16 ECTS. This can also be proven as part of the competencies required in b), if an explict connection to at least one sinophone society or culture is given. 
  • (d) Knowledge of modern Chinese at level B2 (Common European Framework). For the kind of accepted prove of language proficiency, the regulations of the University of Vienna apply. 
  • (e) Submission of a self-written letter of motivation in English. Please use the form provided here (PDF) 

To prove a), b) and c) list all achievements you made in this regard before your application in a description of qualifications. The directorate of studies thereby examines if the QZB are fulfilled. Prospective students who have completed the bachelor programme in Sinology at the University of Vienna already fulfill the QZB. 

Description of qualifications

To be admitted to the master programme in Sinophone Societies and Cultures you need previous knowledge and competencies relevant to the degree programme as qualitative admission requirements, short QZB (see above). You have to provide a description of qualifications (form, PDF) to prove these competencies. This is a depiction of achievements that correspond to the required ECs, which you obtained before your application for admission. Save the form, fill it in and attach it when applying for admission in u:space at "Further documents and proofs" as document type "Description of qualifications".

Prospective students who completed the bachelor programme in Sinology at the University of Vienna, already fulfill the QZB. Upload your transcript of records at "Further documents and proofs" as document type "Description of qualifications" when applying for admission in u:space.
