Step 1: Check the Master Access Guide (MAG) and prepare your documents
-
Check the MAG
A requirement for admission is a completed bachelor's or diploma programme that is in a subject area related to the master's programme you are interested in.
In the Master Access Guide (MAG) you will find out:
- which degree programmes are certainly eligible,
- what proof of language proficiency you need,
- whether you need to to fulfil any qualitative admission requirements (QZB) and
- if you will need to complete supplementary examinations after admission.
-
You need the following documents:
- Valid passport or identity card (both sides) in the format JPEG or PNG
- Higher education degree certificate and transcripts/diploma supplement
- including a list of all courses you have completed with grades and ECTS/semester hours
- including translation and legalisation, merged into one PDF file.
- Note the country-specific requirements for admission.
- We also accept a proof of your university about your completed degree and your transcript/diploma supplement.
- Proof of language proficiency according to the Master Access Guide (MAG)
- Further documents required according to the curriculum (e.g. letter of motivation)
Step 2: Submit your application for admission
Next, set up a u:account in our student portal u:space. We explain exactly how to do this and what you need to bear in mind here:
Set up a u:account
Select “u:account Registration” in u:space and set up your u:account. Make sure you remember your login details, as you will need them for your studies. We will send an activation link to your e-mail address.
Register in u:space
Log in to u:space and complete the registration for prospective students. Here's how:
- After logging in, first select “Studies”.
- Fill in your personal data in the registration form for students.
- Upload your valid passport or identity card (front and back!) as a JPEG or PNG file.
Submit your application within the application period at Studies → Apply for admission. Upload all the necessary documents there. If you have prepared all documents submitting your application will only take a few minutes.
Your application in u:space
We can only process your application if you have uploaded all documents including translation and, if required, legalisation. Until then, you will not receive an admission letter.
Missing documents or legalisations will delay the processing of your application.
Find out which proof of language proficiency you need for your application and admission in the Master Access Guide (MAG) of your chosen degree programme.
You want to start a degree programme in which you need a proof of German language proficiency for admission to the degree programme? In this case you can attend a German course in the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (VWU). Here we explain your steps to attending the VWU.
Complete the statistical data and select “Continue to application”. Make sure that all the details you have entered are correct.
Select “Submit application”. We have now received your application. As soon as the status of your application is “submitted” we can process your application.
The processing of your application may take several weeks. For organisational reasons, we are unable to provide any information on the status of your application.

We will send your admission letter to the e-mail address you provided in u:space. You will then also be able to find it in u:space at Personal Matters → My Documents.
The admission may
- be granted without any supplementary examinations.
- be granted with supplementary examinations from the bachelor's programme (max. 30 ECTS).
- be rejected due to missing pertinence/qualitative admission requirements.
Your admission letter will state whether you need to complete any “subject-specific” supplementary examinations from the bachelor's programme at the University of Vienna. These supplementary examinations compensate for subject-specific differences. You do not have to be admitted to the bachelor's programme. You will complete the “subject-specific” supplementary examinations after your admission to the master's programme. You have to complete them within two semesters.
Your admission letter is valid for two semesters – as long as there were no statutory or admission-related changes to the curriculum in this timeframe. If you do not start your studies in the semester you have applied for, admission is also possible in the following semester. If you do not complete the admission procedure then, you have to apply for admission again. We recommend starting your studies in the winter semester.
You have received your admission letter? This does not mean that you are already admitted to the degree programme. We explain your next steps here:
