Egyptology (master's programme)
From the beginnings of Pharaonic civilisation to gender roles in Egyptian mythology: on the master's programme in Egyptology, you will develop an in-depth understanding of ancient Egyptian culture in all its complexity and learn to get to the bottom of archaeological and textual sources, including their various interpretations. You will engage with original sources in Middle and New Egyptian, analyse temple and funerary contexts, and combine archaeology with art and architectural history to form a holistic picture – research-based, practice-oriented and in tune with the times.
What is it about?
On the master's programme in Egyptology, you will engage critically with texts, images and artefacts from the Nile Valley dating from the 5th millennium BC to the first centuries AD [> Coptic], approaching your material with contemporary questions and always drawing on the latest research. In doing so, you will deepen your competences in understanding cultures that are foreign and historically distant.
During the master's programme, you will learn, amongst other things:
- to work with various stages of the Egyptian language and writing systems (New Egyptian, Middle and New Hieratic, as well as Coptic, depending on your elected elective module)
- how to read, perform translation and analyse texts from a literary or linguistic perspective
- how to accurately describe, date and interpret architectural and artistic works within their context
- how to record and evaluate archaeological evidence using a methodologically critical approach – from the documentation of artefacts to their comprehensive interpretation.
