Japanology (master's programme)

From J-Pop to wabi-sabi: discover how people in Japan think, live and communicate today. The master's programme in Japanese Studies combines language, research and real-world experience. It is the ideal course for anyone who wants to look beyond the clichés and understand contemporary Japan in all its diversity.

What is it about?

You will engage in an in-depth examination of modern and contemporary Japanese society and culture. You will work with Japanese-language primary sources and engage with academic literature in German, English and Japanese. You will develop your language skills, distinguish between specialist terminology and different styles of language, and communicate at a high level both orally and in writing.

You will confidently apply theories and methods from the social and cultural sciences and conduct independent research into current trends and phenomena. If you wish, you can specialise in practical competencies, for example in the fields of media relations, literary translation or language teaching.
