Master programme in Physical Geography: Environmental Dynamics and Sustainability

Your steps in the admission procedure depend on whether you have completed your previous degree programme at the University of Vienna or another post-secondary educational institution.

 Multilingual degree programme

The languages of instruction in this degree programme are German and at least one more language.

Additional requirements

German language proficiency at level A2

To be admitted to the multilingual master programme in Physical Geography: Environmental Dynamics and Sustainability, you have to provide a proof of German language proficiency at level A2. You already have to upload this proof when you apply for admission to the degree programme. 

English language proficiency at level B2

To be admitted to an English or multilingual master programme at the University of Vienna, you have to provide a proof of English language proficiency. 

To apply for admission to this degree programme, you require a proof of English language proficiency at level B2

Qualitative admission requirements (QZB)

The admission to a master programme is only possible, if you have completed an eligible degree programme in the same discipline. To be admitted to this master programme you also have to prove qualitative admission requirements (QZB) when submitting your application for admission. The QZB are binding and determine which knowledge and competencies you must have at the time you apply for admission to this master programme. QZB cannot be completed during the degree programme you have applied for (other than supplementary examinations).

As a requirement for admission, applicants must provide evidence of the following knowledge and competences amounting to 30 ECTS according to the Curriculum (only available in German):

  • a) Basic knowledge at university level to the extent of at least 15 ECTS from the fields of:
    • Geomorphology, Geoecology, Soil Science, Climatology and Hydrology
  • b) Basic prior knowledge of quantitative or qualitative methods of empirical social science totaling 15 ECTS:
    • Basic prior knowledge at university level of at least 5 ECTS credits in cartography, geoinformatics or geocommunication OR
    • basic prior knowledge at university level of at least 5 ECTS credits inquantitative methods of natural science (solid basic knowledge of statistics) OR
    • basic prior knowledge at university level of at least 5 ECTS credits in in natural science field or laboratory methods OR
    • basic prior knowledge at university level of at least 5 ECTS credits in natural hazards or natural science/engineering risk research.

Prospective students who have completed the bachelor programme in Geography or the Bachelor programme in Teacher Education with Geography and Economic Education at the University of Vienna already fulfill the QZB.

Description of qualifications

To be admitted to the master programme in Geographies of Global Change and Sustainability Transformations, you need previous knowledge relevant to the field. You may prove the required knowledge by completing the extension curricula in "Geography: Change in Environmental Systems" and either "Geography: Climate Change" or "Geographie: Natural Hazards, Vulnerability and Disasters" or "Ecology". If you have completed the required ECs, upload your transcript of records at "Further documents and proofs" as document type "Description of qualifications" when applying for admission in u:space.

If you can not prove your previous knowledge by completing the programme at the University of Vienna, you have to provide a description of qualifications (form, PDF). This is a depiction of achievements that correspond to the required knowledge, which you obtained before your application for admission. Save the form and fill it in. Attach the form when applying for admission in u:space at "Further documents and proofs" as document type "Description of qualifications".

Fill in the description of qualifications as follows: 

  1. Enter the title of the achievement. 
  2. Enter the date, when you completed the achievement.
  3. Enter the ECTS, that you achieved thereby.
  4. State at which educational institution you completed the achievement.
  5. Describe which of the QZB you fulfil thereby.
