The master’s programme in History aims at preparing students for employment in professions that deal with the reception, presentation, communication, application and investigation of questions relating to history. Graduates of the master’s programme are able to carry out research on history independently and present their research results in a professional manner. This includes exploring the current state of international research on a specific topic, developing research questions, researching suitable empirical material, developing a research design, the reception of theories of history, social sciences and cultural studies, and formulating, presenting (medially) and critically discussing research results.

Please note that the instruction language of this programme is German. To start the degree programme, you need to hold a certificate of German proficiency on C1 level.

Study Programme

The master’s programme consists of modules on the following subject areas: Introduction to Topics, Eras and Regions, Design and Implementation of Independent Research Projects and Realisation of an Independent Research Project. Furthermore, students have to complete an Individual Specialisation and a master’s module. To complete the programme, students have to write a master’s thesis and pass a master’s examination.

Students can specialise in the following areas: ancient history, middle ages, modern period, contemporary history, global history, history of Eastern Europe, Austrian history, digital humanities/digital history, women’s and gender history, research on European history and culture, history of science, economic and social history and MATILDA.
