Choosing your working languages
The bachelor programme Transcultural Communication can be completed with either two or three working languages, according to the Curriculum. You have to decide if you want to study with two working languages (A and Bx) combined with extension curricula or if you want to study with three working languages (A, Bx and By) when you apply for admission.
A-, Bx- and By-languages
A-language
The A-languages is your first language or erudite language.
Bx-language
The Bx-language is your second language.
By-language
The By-language is your third language. The weight of the Bx- and By-language is of equal value.
The available working languages are defined in the curriculum. You may freely choose your working languages, depending on your language skills. Students whose A-language is not German have to choose German as Bx-language.
Number of working languages
Two working languages
If you want to study with two working languages, you have choose an A- and a Bx-language. You then complete 135 ECTS within the bachelor programme in Transcultural Communication. In addition, you have to complete extension curricula (EC) to the extent of 45 ECTS to finish your studies. You may freely choose any extension curricula according to your own interests.
Three working languages
If you want to study with three working languages, you have to choose an A-, a Bx- and a By-language. The Bx- and By-languages are of equal value.
If you choose to study with three working languages, you complete 180 ECTS in the bachelor programme in Transcultural Communication. You do not have to complete any extension curricula to finish your studies.
Application for admission in u:space
When you apply for admission to the bachelor programme in u:space, you have to select the kind and number of working languages. It is thereby important, that you pay attention to the following points in addition to the steps defined in the description of the admission procedure.
Studying with two working languages and extension curricula
If you choose to study with two working languages (A and Bx) and extension curricula, you have to pick your Bx-language in the first step of the application for admission. Thereby, please proceed as follows (click on the picture to enlarge):
- Log into u:space.
- Select the degree programme with your chosen Bx-language in the format "Transcultural Communication Bx-language with Extension Curricula" below bachelor/diploma.
- Next, choose your A-language. German has to be chosen as either A- or Bx-language*.
- Check the data you've entered in your application and pay attention to the selection of degree programme and A-language before you proceed with "pay" and submit the application*. The working languages cannot be changed later (only the number of working languages, see FAQs).
*The chosen degree programme and working languages can only be displayed in German in these steps in u:space.
Studying with three working languages
If you choose to study with three working languages (A, Bx and By), you have to pick your Bx- and By-language in the first step of the application for admission. Thereby, please proceed as follows (click on the picture to enlarge):
- Log into u:space.
- Select the degree programme with your chosen Bx- and By-language in the format "Transcultural Communication Bx-language By-language" below bachelor/diploma.
- Next, choose your A-language. German has to be chosen as either A- or Bx-language*.
- Check the data you've entered in your application and pay attention to the selection of degree programme and A-language before you proceed with "pay" and submit the application*. The working languages cannot be changed later (only the number of working languages, see FAQs).

FAQ

Is it possible to change the number of working languages?
Yes. It is possible to switch from studying with three working languages to studying with two working languages, or from studying with two to studying with three working languages respectively, once. A change of the number of working languages is only possible during the admission period.
If you switch from three to two working languages, you can choose if you would like to continue your studies with your Bx- or By-language. German has to be chosen as either A- or Bx-language, even after a changing the number of working languages.
If you switch from two to three working languages , you can choose any additional language offered by the Centre of Translation Studies as By-language.

Is it possible to change between A- and Bx- or By-language?
No, unfortunately this is not possible.

Is it possible to switch between Bx- and By-language?
No, it is not possible to switch between Bx- and By-language as there is no difference between these two. Lectures and exams have to completed equally for both languages.

Is it possible to change the number of working languages more than once?
No, a change from studying with two working languages to studying with three working languages (or vice versa) is only permitted once.

How well do you have to know the A-, Bx- and By-language to be admitted to the degree programme?
The required language level for German is C1, irrespective of it being chosen A- or Bx-language. The proof of German language proficiency is required upon admission to the degree programme.
The A-language, if it is not German, is supposed to be the first or erudite language. Hence, a language level of at least C1 is recommended. However, you do not need to submit proof of that language level (with the exception of German) for admission to the degree programme.
For all other languages, regardless of them being chosen as Bx- or By-language, a language level of at least B1 is recommended. You do not complete any language classes during your studies. You can improve your language skills in external language courses if necessary.

I was or am currently admitted to a degree programme at the University of Vienna. Do I have to complete the admission procedure with an online appointment?
If you have been admitted to a degree programme at the University of Vienna in the past, or if you are currently enrolled at the University of Vienna, an online appointment is not required. In this case, please contact the Admission Office via the Servicedesk after the test results are announced, during the admission period, and request admission to an additional degree programme, a change of degree programme, or the resumption of studies. You can only be admitted to this degree programme if you have applied for admission in time, successfully participated in the entrance exam and fulfilled all requirements for admission to a bachelor programme.
If you have been admitted to the bachelor or diploma programme in Transcultural Communication in the past and paused your studies, you are exempt from the entrance exam procedure.
