Admission to master programme International Legal Studies

The prerequisite for admission to a master programme is the completion of an eligible Bachelor or diploma programme (= in the same discipline). Here you will find information on the prerequisites required for admission. If your previous degree programme is considered as a eligible degree programme will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Our advice: Thoroughly acquaint yourself about the prerequisites for admission to your chosen master programme at an early stage. Thereby, you have the possibility to fulfil prerequisites during the course of your previous studies, for example by completing specific extension curricula ("Erweiterungscurricula" - EC).

If your degree programme is not listed as example in the Master Access Guide, your application will be checked individually to determine if an admission to the master programme is possible.

  • Qualitative admission requirements

The qualitative admission requirements include the following prerequisites prior to the admission:

    • Austrian Civil Law including Private International Law and Commercial Law of 35 ECTS
    • Austrian Public Law (Constitutional and Administrative Law) of 30 ECTS
    • Austrian Criminal Law (including Procedure) of 15 ECTS
    • Subjects of International Law, especially European Law and Public International Law of 40 ECTS
    • Knowledge of the languages of instruction of the degree programme: German language proficiency at level C1 and English language proficiency at level B2

In addition to focusing on international law and cross-border issues, the bachelor and master programmes in International Legal Studies together prepare students for a career in traditional legal professions (judge, lawyer, notary) in Austria. One of the legal prerequisites for entry to those professions is a certain minimum of study experience in several subjects of Austrian law.

Therefore, students who plan to join the master programme in International Legal Studies without having a bachelor’s degree in International Legal Studies from the University of Vienna must provide proof of knowledge of those subjects of Austrian law that are taught in the bachelor’s programme in International Legal Studies.
