Try it and withstand all adversities! There are hardly any students at the same institute with a similar impairmend who you could ask. 

According to my own experience, most fellow students without impairment are helpful (sometimes also because it suits them, e.g. when working in groups, so that the task is performed correctly). But people have also provided me with their written notes, because I couldn't read the text on the blackboard or on the overhead slides.

It's very important to get in touch with the course instructors, even if it sometimes makes you uncomfortable. This is especially advisable before exams (I always have my exam sheets printed in font size 16). That usually works, just a few times they forgot about me. The professors are always very nice and ask me if everything is ok.
